Baby and movie

I have been trying to watch "The double life of Veronique" for awhile now. Everytime I turn on the dvd, K wakes up screaming.

He hates that movie.

Its funny, he will sleep through any food network program, the pressure cooker going off, me doing dishes...but not the movie.

I dont know what it is...

So far I have seen about half an hour of the movie - with two interruptions...

I am almost afraid to turn the movie on cause I know he will wake up...

Wish me luck!

Right now I am all alone at home, was watching a movie...and now listening to K cry....

Hmm, must go tend to him...

Ok, yea, so motherhood is definitely the hardest thing I have done and am enjoying it a lot....

Its weird how everything becomes about the baby and you kind of dont care about that...

ok, he is crying again....

I am re-thinking this pacifier thing...thing is now, he kind of needs it to sleep...not a good thing.

Anyhoo, yea its weird how babies become the centre of your world and you dont seem to mind that much.

He is a handful though, already has a personality at 3 months old! Its cute.

In many ways I cant wait for him to grow up and many ways I dont want him to grow up.

Weird.

I saw Sweeney Todd on Saturday. The movie is of course fantastic.

However, being pregnant while watching this movie wasnt easy. Without giving anything away - the movie made me nauseous. I mean I knew what I was getting into but man, it wasnt easy. I should have known when the rolling credits have blood flowing through them...

No Manners!

Rude, Rude, Rude!

We went to see No country for old men, last night. Which is fantastic BTW! See it.

So we go and I find that ppl in theatres have no manners what so ever. Where are your basic manners?

We go in, find a seat, well before the movie begins. We make it a point to go before the movie begins, b/c basically, we dont like seeing movies once they have begun - but also - its unfair to other ppl who get there in time and get the seats and wait for the movie to begin. We have this couple come over - they are late. The movie has already begun and the guy is poking my back asking me if the seat is taken. I say no. He makes us get up - sits down and then, instead of watching the movie - his head is jerking towards the side to see if his partner was there. She comes and he is waving his hands - all the while the movie is going on, and then she comes over to sit. Fine. Its their right to seated like the rest of us.

Then, without giving too much away, there is scene where someone gets shot - the guy says loudly "oh my god". Yeah, did you really not expect that coming smart guy? Anyhoo, then half way through the movie someone's cell phone goes off and then someone is whispering shit.

This happens all the time. I find it so rude. I've had young girls exclaiming "oh my god look at the shoes", dropping drinks and giggling. I've had two wise guys, cracking up half way through Casino Royale - right when Mr. Bond is walking half naked, dripping water, looking super hot.

I've had ppl talking, like discussing grocery list while watching "The Pianist". I could go on. I just wonder if ppl leave all their basic manners when they enter the theater? Everything you have been taught goes out the window!
It is extremely rude to subject other ppl to this!

I am not asking for zombie mode -but atleast have the decency to show up on time, sit and turn off your cell phones. Have the decency to not discuss grocery lists or giggle loudly when you drop your drink. Am I being unreasonable? I think not.

Weekend

I saw the movie Heaven - its is really good. Very haunting.

I alo bought a $190 iron. The best you can find. Which makes me happy cause now I wont mind ironing that much!

I also got blamed for a breakin at my inlaws house. (Nobody got hurt, they stole the pressure washer and some tools). But I get the phone call Sunday morning, my mil on the line, asking me why did I not close the garage door yesterday when I left?
BTW - I came in at 1pm and left at 8, J was with me and when I came, the garage door was open.
When we left, my inlaws were outside chatting, true they could not see the garage but they were outside.
Of course I point this out and my mil says something to the effect of, "oh you should be more careful cause we are old and you should closed the door!" Then, of course in my true mil style, she says "oh, I am not blaming you but you need to be more careful"
I asked if anyone was hurt and what they took and then hung up. I am glad I dont live there anymore. I am done being the scapegoat for everything. Whateves!

Namesake

I watched the Namesake this past weekend. I have to say Mira Nair is freakin awesome! Since she is directing 'Shantaram' there is some hope for the movie!

Every bombayite that has read the book - hates it for the fact that it seems illogical and the dates are seriously skewed. I'll have to read it to see what they are talking about - but mostly I have heard these reviews from well read ppl so I would believe them.

Anyways, back to the movie at hand - it is awesome. It really is. Tabu was, as usual, amazing and so was Kal Penn.

I have to say - I did not read the book - although my mum loved it so I guess I will give it a try.

I was reading the message boards on imdb and there was someone who asked the question why? As in ' why are all books coming out of 2nd gen asian* living abroad on the same sort of subject?' I kind of see what that person was asking. I am more interested in why are all the books dealing with the same subject so popular? Its not that other asian authors are not writing about anything else - its just its not as interesting as a heart wrenching story of an immigrant. Plus, it is easy to identify with it. I guess.

I am just waiting for a 'Catcher in Rye' or 'Pornographer's Poem' from an asian writer.

I guess in many ways being an asian writer is like being a brown actor. You get typecast into playing Appu or the guy running the grocery store. As a brown author, I guess it is relatively easy to get ppl to read your writing if it talks about those same immigrant stories as opposed to something different.

* Asian here means those from Asia. I hate the term South Asian as I was not asked when ppl decided on that term as the politically correct term to describe me. Personally, actually I prefer Indian, but thats a whole can of worms that will be opened some othertime.

Wow

I just saw United 93 yesterday.
I didnt want to but I did and I am glad I did. (I am going to try not to put any spoilers here....)

It was a fantastic movie - as far as movie making goes. What could have been a cheap/insensitive movie turned out to be just mind blowing.

It was so well made. So sensitive and so thoughtful - I thought. And I really think it was sort of a timeless memorial to those who lost their lives on that flight. Throughout the movie - you know what is going to happen. The inevitable, in a way. In the end - I thought that these guys, those on the plane were nothing less than heroes.

Like everyone else - I cant watch the towers in flames or the planes running into them. But you do see that in the movie - very briefly. What comes out of the movie is much more. Much much more.

You get the true sense of the attack. The cold blooded murder on that day. I keep thinking what a senseless act that was....

I remember watching it on TV. And the movie took me back to that day. Where I was, what I was doing when I found out. But more than that - what I took from the movie was love.

I know it sounds ironic or stupid even - but in the end - when the plane was going down...there was a lot of love. People calling their loved ones - to say they love them. People on the plane sticking together in hope to get to their loved ones.

Which is why I think that it was a timeless memorial for all those who lost their lives that day. Something that families left behind can see and re-live. The love that all those people had - even when they knew they probably will not make it. It was very touching.

Definately worth a watch!

Movies

I just saw

21 Grams - it was fantastic! It really was. It is one of those movies which make you think and engage you.

and

Pretty Persuasion - was ok. The movie Thirteen was better. Even Racheal Wood is just a fantastic actress.
